Auto Trailers?

I'm looking into building a track car and I'm wondering what to look for in an auto trailer (to pull a e36/e46?)

How much do you have to spend? Open or enclosed?

Chronic:

The open trailer is easier to tow as it weighs less and doesn't act like a big sail being dragged behind you, but there is nothing like an enclosed trailer for a secure feeling when you are at a hotel overnight and as an escape from foul weather or sun at the track. My neighbor has an AC system (run from a portable gas generator) installed in his enclosed trialer and he loves it.

Consider your tow vehicle when looking for a trailer as well. Pre-owned turbo diesel trucks are getting fairly inexpensive and despite the added fuel cost for diesel they are REALLY nice to tow with.

I'd suggest the enclosed trailer too (if you have a place to store it and the ability to tow it).

For example:
I sold a 26' tag trailer last year. It had plenty of room to store a car, an AC, some 110v and 12 v lights. I used a cheap 5000W generator to use the AC if I wanted. Pulling it with a crew cab Ford Dually (diesel) was a breeze. I sold it for $4800.

I suggest looking at http://www.racingjunk.com There is a constant flow of racing trailers on that site. Usually you can find one in your area.

One other thing, an E46 takes 15' of floor space in a trailer. A 26' enclosed is a nice size as they are not too large but not too small. I now have a 48' as I got tons of stuff I take to the race.

Whenever you get a used trailer, I suggest going over all of the wheel bearings, brakes and purchase a good set of trailer tires (heaviest load racing you can get) and have two spares on hand. Then you can tow with confidence.
