e92 m3 vs 335i vs 135i test

saw this posted on another forum. (too bad its in german)

couple of things noticeable- the M3 easily beat the other two around the track while the slightly heavier 335i still managed to get a one second lead against its little brother 135i. Also it appears that the 335 was running without the sports package and smaller 17 in wheels. I wonder how much that affected and how much faster it could have been other wise.

also it looks like the 135 was slightly better off the line, but by around 120 mph the 335 pulls ahead- (better aerodynamics)

so does may anyone read german and translate it a little?

i could see how the 135 might do worse, they were only running 215's up front, with 245 in the rear... thatd be understeer city compared to the 335's 225 front and rear.

if heavier means better i've got a feeling bmw has made the 135 slower than the 335 in hopes to sell more 335's. they can't have the lower model faster than the higher model. but i'm sure a little bit of work and the 135 can be superior to a similarly modded 335.

I really doubt that.

for example-

motortrend just did a comparison test between the 135i and new EVO. And the 135i hit the 0-60 mark in 4.7 seconds and the quarter at 13.3 seconds. And it was a step!!

Thats pretty damn quick little car. And thats more like a 335 manual time. (although I did once see a 4.8 second time posted for the 335 auto as well in a mag)

BMW doesn't make a car heavier, they don't try to make it lighter... the 1 series has less aluminum to keep the price down, not to make it slower. BMW is competing with other car companies too, not just its own 3 series so to make a car heavier to be slower than the 3 is not smart

then how does a 335 non-sport come in faster than a 135?

probably the matching 225 series tires helped a bit. Less bit of understeer for the 335i.

No matter, the 135i still won the overall score.

This is confusing to me. I cant read German was it the same driver for all cars?

I can see where the 335 has better aerodynamics due to it being lower, so maybe that plays into it, but it shouldnt be a second faster especially if the 135 had the electronic lsd.

I know the 135 isnt much lighter, but it is a little and has the same exact engine plus better brakes.

The only time I can think that the aerodynamics come into play is if they had very long straights but I cant tell from the article.

Automobile mag road test editor Marc Noordeloos:

"If I was driving the new M3 and a 135i wanted to race me, I'd be a bit nervous. The 135i's 300-hp twin-turbo engine is amazing, evem coming off as overkill at times."

hhhmmmmmm
