Cool Best brakes - are 15" rotors worse than 13"? 12 piston worse than 6?

There are a plethora of BBK options out there for an e46 M3, and for the majority of owners, it's mostly aesthetic. I'm in love with the aesthetics of the rediculous WP Pro 15.4" front and 15" rear's that supersickbimmer has.

However, I won't take aesthetics over performance. Yes, all BBK's are likely to far exceed my needs, but that aside, is there a better BBK out there that will out perform those massive brakes on the street or on the autox course?

Cost isn't a huge concern, but let's not spend $20k on a BBK for a $30k car.

So, I'd really like to be educated here. What do you guys think?

I would say that you do not need a BBK for Auto cross. Upgrade your pads and rotors, and change out your fluid...

ATE Super Blue DOT 4 Fluid
Slotted/Crossdrilled/Vented Rotors
Race Pads

No need for added unsprung weight just to stop... Your ABS will take care of that for you. All the big brake kits will do is fight with ABS to do their jobs, and you end up wasting money for performance that you don't get.

Either remove the ABS and go with a race set up, or make your street setup incredible...

well put

If performance is what you desire research different pads. Our cars come with very good brakes. OEM pads are alreade on the abrasive side which is good when the temps rise. The improvement can be made with the parts suggested above. Unless you have a car that races 120+ with alot of braking BBK's are worthless, looks is the only benifit all the guys you see with them have. All a BBK does for the most part is disipate heat bertter. If you can lock up your wheels going 100 (and you could if your abs went into a coma) then your brakes are fine.

go with UUC's Alcon or Wilwood brakes, if your looking for performance.

there plenty big, but save tons and tons of weight while being affordable

How do you save weight?

I would suggest maybe upsizing the rotors to larger ones, and getting twin piston calipers...

Old VW's do this all the time. Grab the calipers, carriers and rotors off of a Corrado G60, and install on your Rabbit. You need at least 15" wheels, but it was worth it.

I don't know if there are larger brakes that bolt on, but you could research the mounting and find out.

aluminum hats on the rotors and lighter calipers = saving weight

upsizing rotors = adding weight brah... ... common sense lol...
for auto-x you dont need sh!t all you need is race pads and some decent rotors along with lines and fluid....

and to OP's question, you dont need anything just bring your car in and drive

While I appreciate all the typical "You don't need..." comments, as I said, I like the visual, and I have the money, so this is the combo I've decided on:

Wheels, Tires, Brakes - $18,000
Street Wheels: Kinesis F110 19x10 - $5000
Street Tires: Michelin Pilot Sport 2 in 255/35/19 - $1400
Track Wheels: 19x9.5 OE CSL's - $2200
Track Tires: Michelin Pilot Sport Cup in 265/30/19 - $1600
Rear Brakes: Brembo GT 355mm w/4 pot calipers - $3500
Front Brakes: Brembo GT 380mm w/6 pot calipers - $4300
Lines: Brembo SS Lines - Included

why would you get bigger rear brakes than front?

Be careful with those PSC's....you might find you like the R888 better.

Alright, fixed that post.

My one question is - would it be bad to have the same sized brakes front and back? As long as I have a bias adjustment valve, I could do 380's front and rear. I understand it's probably unnecessary, but would it harm braking distance or equipment longevity, etc?

your track wheels should be 18s ...
like 18" forgelines or kinesis..

i still dont see spending another $20,000 on a $25,000-$30,000 car...
you could have bought a used 911 turbo which is good out of the box
and your auto-x tires should be hossiers not cups..

Amen to 18" track wheels.

When you add a 380mm setup, all you are doing is adding weight to the whole deal. Our RACE car only uses 320mm up front and 294 at the rear. If you MUST get a brembo bbk then get 355/345. Or if you want to be a real "baller", get the PFC setup
