330i money shifted...ooops
A buddy of mine shifted into 2nd instead of 4rth in his 330 under full power at the redline. Now it is only firing on three cylinders, those are the only codes its throwing. It will start, kinda, and doesn't make any mechanical sounds. Any ideas, is it toast?

Yeah, but bent valves would make some nasty noise tho...I wouln't even try to drive it like that. Replace the block. biggers pistons FTW.

High RPM valve float leads to bad bad things. Such as bent valves. they would also not make any noise unless they were bent to the point of actually droping the valve it's self in the cylinder. it doesnt take much of a smack for a valve to loose it's sealing abillity. on the other hand Ill take your buddy's motor off of him for free . lol

valves are bent, but not bad enough to notice any crazy noises if car will still run. Happens all the time with mis-shifts! i would just get a new head for it, and then you will have a nice new tight top end! probably around 2k to get it all done with labor at the right shop.

Yes, I am the "buddy"...years of driving without incident and then...the money shift. Head is coming off as we speak and the consensus if one or more bent valves. The shop I used to work at has a valve and seat grinder, so it looks like ill get a three angle valve job while the car is under the knife, and hopefully have it back on the road this weekend with a little more power. If all is well I won't have to replace much more than that, but seals may be just as well since the car is at 104k. More to follow when it comes apart...

Well parts are in the mail...tope end rebuild, all new guides, seals, exhaust valves, valve job, timing chain, etc...
Parts ended up around $1000, and found a good spot online called AboveAllMotorwerks.com. They sell a ton of BMW OEM and other popular European brands stuff at good prices. They also have a great catalog, and you can search for parts with BMW part #'s and thye give you other options for purchase. Update next week when its all done... |

When you go around 8300 rpm (on a 330), you bend the valves. All you need to do is buy some new valves and do a valve job. If I've seen this once, I've seen it a hundred times.
One solution to reducing the chance of the "money shift," is to use a 100% stock shift linkage. Short shifters add to the probability of a missed shift. Talent behind the wheel will more than make up the difference in quick shifts. Again, if I've seen it once, I've seen it a hundred times.
