So far so good. The transmission shifts so smooth you can hardly feel the gear changes. I called the dealer and of coures they stated "you do not have to change the fluid, it is life time". I also cahned the transfer case fluid to Amsoil ATF for that fluid was dark in color when I drained it. The only problem that I keep having is the service engine soon light keeps coming on. I have replaced the gas cap and after the lights comes on, I take off the cap and put it back on and the light goes off after a short time. Anyone else have this symptom?

Glad to hear, you should think abouit changing fluid filter evenry 25-30,000 miles. Dexron III will not last 100,000 miles.

As for your check engine light, try disconnecting the battery and waiting 10 seconds then reconnect.

Transmission filter was $70.00 dollars and 7 qts of Amsoil ATF $60.00. Amsoil also has a hand pump for their qt bottles. I recomend the pump for it makes filling the transmission much easier. I paid $12.00 for the pump. I located a filler bolt near the transmission shift linkage. I see others use a torx bolt hole on the transmission but I found the other bolt much easier to use. I purchesed the filter from Bavauto located in NH.

The only problem I have is getting my wife to let me drive her car. No problems whatsoever. The car runs like new. Use the Amsoil ATF, you will not be disappointed.

Thanks for doing this and getting it written up Chriztofor! I have 150k on my 2000 328Ci and have been going back and forth with whether to change the tranny fluid or not. Your post was enough to convince me to go ahead and change it.

I too suffer from the "reverse problem" but mine takes about 2 seconds to shift into reverse. Do you have an update since it has been almost 4 months since you changed the fulid? Still running well? Is the reverse problem much improved now?

Update: Transmission died at 167,400 miles but

it was NOT due to changing the fluid. The 5th gear went. For $2,850 I had my trusted transmission guy rebuild it which comes with a nationwide lifetime warranty! The place is located on Staten Island, NY and it is called H & A Transmissions, 25 Grille Court, Staten Island, New York 10309 Telephone: 718-948-5578. Ask for Harvey. After 7,000 miles it is still going strong.

Note: The reason why he is my trusted transmission guy is that he fixed my brother's 74 corvette and father's 1989 Dynasty. Corvette was sold a few years later with no problems with the transmission and the dynasty is still on the road with the same rebuilt transmission! By the way, before my guy touched the Dynasty transmission, Dodge rebuilt the transmission 3 times to no avail.

My car also has around 160,000 miles. I took it to a BMW specialist to change the tranny fluid and filter. After about 3 months, the transmission failed (wouldn't shift into any gears). The fluid that came out of the tranny was burnt and black (despite being changed only a few months back).

Coincidence? I don't know, you decide...change at your own risk...

Changing the ATF fluid need to be done prior to 60k miles, and every 30k miles after that. This seems to be the general consensus. Higher mileage cars do tend to suffer sometimes immediate, sometimes shortly thereafter catastrophic failure after changing the fluid.

I have 65k and am about to change to the Redline D4 and diff fluid as well. MIGHT consider the RP ATF and diff fluid but not sure yet. Anyone have an input re: Royal Purple products... I use the motor oil now, and like it alright.
