blue ray question

hey guys i'm in the market to get a blue ray player. My friend keeps telling me to just get a ps3. I already have a xbox 360 so don't really need another gaming console. The question i have is are the blue ray players on the market better then a ps3?

Honestly, just get the ps3. Can't beat all the functions for the price. We have two ps3s and one regular blu-ray player. We hardly use the regular one.

That all depends on how much you are willing to pay...

http://www.usa.denon.com/ProductDeta...Components.asp

While the PS3 may provide acceptable Blu-Ray play back, it is also trying to be a gaming station. Therefore, the components utilized for the video side of Blu-Ray are not going to be the "best" you can get for the same price point, when comparing similar priced, dedicated Blu-Ray with a PS3.

My Dad has been a HT guy for years. He bought himself the PS3 as a Christmas present for himself. It later gave him an excuse to upgrade his receiver as well. The firmware upgrade a few months ago allowed DTS-MA encoded blu rays to be heard in 7.1. Its fantastic.

I have an excuse to stop by and play video games now.

Here's some good info:

For the money, PS3. If you are willing to spend $800+ there are better players, but not a night and day difference.

Will the PS3 upgrade your regular DVD's to near 1080p quality like the Blu Ray players advertise ?
They is something to consider if you are only going to use it for movies and do not play games.

You can not upgrade a DVD. You can upconvert but your TV already does it. And no, it is not near 1080p quality, but most people cant see the difference between 720p and 1080p anyway, so 480p vs 720p is not that extreme.

Have any good recommendations? I currently have a Pioneer BDP-05FD and it's a piece of sh!t.

And for those looking at the PS3, I went that route originally and returned it because it's not very home theater friendly. It uses Bluetooth for everything so it will not integrate into most universal remotes.

dunno about that. PS3 continues to outperform stand-up players in its price range, in terms of audio, video and features.

HT guys view the the PS3 as a blu-ray player that happens to play video games

There is an BT to IR adaptor that you can buy to fix that. IIRC it's about $30

PS3 is the 2nd best of the BLURAY inventor (SONY). The best cost >$1K. Go for the used 60g PS3, the best PS3 made.!

only thing i dont like about the ps3 is that it can't bitstream TrueHD sound. It processes the sound internally and sends the audio over to the receiver. It doesn't sound as good as having the receiver process the sound. when i bitstream regular dolby digital it sounds better than when i have the ps3 process truehd internally...

I agree with ^^^^. My friend has both a ps3 and a sony bluray player that outputs TrueHD and DTS-HD formats through bitstream. Bitstream sounds better through his system. But if you are also a gamer, ps3 is where it's at.

You just need to calibrate your system correctly. What AVR do you have? It may not be compatible with PS3. Need a HDMI input or multi-analog inputs.

i've got hdmi input from the ps3 into my Onkyo 606 reciever... so far from what i can tell dolby digital seems louder and more clear bitstream than true hd pcm... maybe its just all in my head...

^ louder doesn't necessarily mean clearer. Does having the PS3 decode instead of letting a receiver do it REALLY make that much of a difference?
