Coolant change on my '00 328ci

I am doing the coolant change on my 2000 328ci as we speak.

I haven't done this before, so i'm following these DIYs

I only see one blue drain plug under the car. When i drained it only about a quart came out. I poured a little over a cup of distilled water into the expansion tank to rinse it out a bit, but nothing came out... so i added more water, and the tank filled up. it seems like the expansion tank isn't draining...

I am going back under the car to see if maybe i missed the second drain plug..? i already looked to see but i only saw the one i drained.

I bet it's something so simple but damn.... i can't figure it out

The coolant system on our cars are such a PITA! (I have no other frame of reference though, never done it to another car)

I changed my expansion tank and had to do a flush and I literally had to drive a block, stop and add coolant, and repeat. The tank DOESN'T drain so you need to get everything circulating before you can add more. It literally took me about 2 days to get it topped off.

I re-read your question and I remember not much fluid coming out. I was expecting more.

Just let the engine heat up, SLOWLY open the cap releasing pressure and you should be able to add more. After a while that won't work and you will have to actually drive it a little to get it really circulating.

And DON'T over tighten any of the plastic screws. I found out the hard way several times (Stranged in the middle lane of a highway in snow after everything boiled over and another screw failure after driving 2000 miles, thank God )

Is your's an auto? If so, there is only the one blue drain screw. The manuals have a drain screw on the bottom connector "T" of the expansion tank, the autos don't. You can pull the hose at the T connector, or you can pull the lower radiator hose to get more coolant out. Messy, but about the best alternative if you're running a step.

there is NO point in removing the expansion tank, way too much work. once you pull the drain plug...and have the cap open on the expansion tank it will drain. i have NEVER had any bmw not drain out with both open. you have the screw all the way out? start the car with both open/off the car and see if it sucks it all down and drains...just don't let it run too long

I have only one blue drain plug. Just remove the drain plug (screw) next to the header. Be judicious when you remove the screws cause it will splatter all over your face. You've done the right course of action.

Yep...Just remove the lower screw, open up the exansion tank, start the car up, and then open the bleeder screw. With the car running, it will start draining out of the tank if it's warm enough.

that's what i ended up doing. i was kinda hesitant running my car with the bleeder open... but a lot more came out, draining all in the expansion tank.
