The exact name is the PAC SWI-X.

I just bought one the other day to put in my car. I should have it in some time this week.

I found it at Audio Outfitters for only $49 plus shipping.

I'm excited to hook it up and try it out when my new head unit gets installed this week. I've heard good things about this little item.

how exactly does the pac-swix get installed, ive heard it requires some drilling somewhere so it points to the head unit, is this the only way or is there an alternative so i dont have to drill a hole anywhere?

Its very east to install. The only drilling that is required is to mount the "eye" that sends IR codes to your HU. If you dont want to drill any holes, you can "maybe" wedge the "eye" somewhere. The best place for it is to drill a small hole on your steering column, right under the ignition.

So there is no other way around this right? Unless I can keep the stock HU? I've been reading up on it, but the installation on subs/amps to the stock HU just doesn't seem clear...

You can still retain if you opt to purchase the "steering Wheel Interface". Most of the Car Stereo Shops have them for about $60. Crutchfield has them to.
