Question Dealer tack-on

Went to my local dealer to start ordering my car. European delivery - 330Ci, Titanium Silver, Stick, Bi-Xenon's, Sport package. Start filling out the paperwork for a lease, the sales drone comes back from "management" and says,
"oh by the way. Since this is a custom order, you have to order a sunroof with your car".
Me: "Ummm... why?"
Drone: "Just in case you decide you don't like/want the car, it'd make it easier for us to sell it".
Skipping the dialogue that ensued, the point was that, according to the drone, there is no dealership that'll order a BMW without the whole in the roof.
The primary issue I have with this is not the request, but the timing. Had he told me upfront that a special-order car should be ordered with , I'd probably go along with it...

BMWNA says "well, they _can_ do this - it is their call".

Is this the experience other people have had? It strikes me as rather odd that people buy BMW's for a sunroof. I allways thought that people bought a BMW for a BMW, a sunroof was an option, just like metal paint and all that.

Any recomendations/suggestions?

Try a different dealer. Not all dealers are like that. My dealer told me that since I got leatherette, I had to put down a $1500 non-refundable deposit because it's hard to sell a car w/ leatherette. But they let me order it with 'ette anyway. So i paid the $1500 non-refundable deposit.

That is BS

order from another dealership. I am surprised that they didn't tell you to get step because sticks ar a bitch to sell in Socal. Anyone who wants a manual 330ci probably won't care if it has no sunroof. Doesn't this defy the purpose of a "custom order"

Tell them no

you'll take your business elsewhere, and I bet they change their tune.

That's what I figured I'd do. A coworker of mine used to work on another dealership, I figure I'll ask the management there.

As Ward said, what's the point in having a custom order car if they try to tack crap onto it.

Thanks for the opinions, one and all.

Take your money elsewhere

Take your cash somewhere else. Be sure to let the sales idiot and the sales manager idiot at that dealership that they just lost your sale.

I ordered my E46 without a sunroof for helmet clearance and did not hear any gripes from the sales person who handled the order.

Wouldn't the sunroof give you a little more room for helmet clearance?!?

I'd take my business elsewhere, and let them know that they blew the deal!
