Change Auto Transmissions?

Hey guys,

I found a 323ci for sale locally with a bum transmission, have not made the drive down there to see it yet but I am guessing it has the ZF. Does it have to be replaced with a ZF or can i swap in a getrag?

Is this car worth picking up? The guy claims its in amazing condition, and only has 107k miles on it. Obviously I will have to see it to believe it...

Thanks!!

I would keep looking. I asked the dealer how much it would be to replace the auto transmission in my car and he quoted me $7k, which is about how much a 323i with 100k miles is worth.

Well I have found both a ZF and a Getrag locally for under $600, but just don't know if i want to replace it with a ZF that could easily fail.

No matter what automatic you get it will eventually fail. And the biggest part of the transmission replacement is the labor. Just buy a 5/6 speed.

A buddy and I did an auto transmission swap in a weekend. We ran into one hickup but its was an 850 so that's a whole other story. If you have someone experienced enough and a cheap auto transmission then it should not be a problem at all. I would however look for one in working order.

GM can not replace ZF

I've asked dealers, BMW specialized techs. the electrical connectors are different and has to be changed. I know because i was selling my GM to a member here that was told he had a GM but instead the dealer gave him the wrong info . Meaning his car had a ZF.

Well my 2001 330CI has about 167K miles on it and if the tranny does go out I will do a replacement with another ZF. So far no problems, no ATF changes...too late now and no reverse issues as of yet. I'm honestly expecting it to become a problem in the next year or 2. If it does the dealer charges about $750 or so in labor to put one in. The engine has no issues and runs 95%+ as it did when I purchased it at 63k miles.
