Question Purpose of differential?

what is the purpose or in other words what does a differential do in a bmw? because i need to get a rear differential changed ... does it make any difference if i get it changed or no ?

Next time you ask a question you may want to try to compose it a little better (so it makes sense)...

What exactly are you asking? Did someone or your mechanic tell you that your differential is going bad? Or are you just asking if it is possible to swap out your original differential for a "better" one?

To answer the OP. The differential distributes power from the driveshaft to the rear wheels. It also allows the rear wheels to turn at different speeds to prevent the tires from scrubbing while you are turning. The wikipedia article looks pretty good for more info.

Whether it needs to be changed or not depends on what you want or need. If it is failing, it needs to be replaced. If it is not failing and you want a better/newer one that is a rather complex answer that is best served by searching for limited slip differential and differential on this site.
