If it's the clutch going out you would feel slippage through each gear. Does the car pull good and hard as you are moving up the gears? Tach should not move way faster than the speed if I remember correctly which would indicate a slipping clutch.

I to have a bit of a "judder" when taking of and if I gently push the gas or give more aggressive gas it does not do it. It only happens in a certain position and if it is happening I can apply more gas and it stops the judder.

This should be a software update I would think.

it's because you need to give a little gas when at a stop. The car is actual in neutral at a complete stop, despite saying '1' gear.

if you give a little bit of gas before giving more throttle, you shouldnt experience this anymore

alot of people do the clear bra now. it's pretty much clear vinyl with sun protection. it gets pricey for the front end (bumper, partial hood, mirrors) when I did it (2) years ago, it was like around $500-600... but its worth not having the rock chips

My Ride: is dirty
Mine only does this when I accelerate from a stop position at light throttle. Heavier throttle positions and it's a smooth operator. It does this more then its colder outside, but as it gets above freezing, it dissapears. It's not a clutch slip issue, it shifts and holds fine in all gears and will sure bang shifts in S6, it's just that initial acceleration and it only happens in first gear up between 1,000-1,800rpm, but not in second gear. This might also be called clutch chatter.

I've disconnected the MAF to see if thats a possible cause, nope. I have new spark plugs, ignition coils, fuel pump, fuel filter, air filter. I've tried the SMG reset, so I guess my only solution would be to check for a software update from the dealer.

hey, i have an smg with about 55k and experience the same judder symptoms in 1st gear. It isn't the bucking bronco type of jerk which is a separate feeling where the car just wants to take off. So far i've reset the smg computer by holding in the paddles for 5 secs while driving above 50mph and putting the gear in neutral, i've recently had the computer remapped at the dealer. I've tried engaging the gas slowly from a stop, slamming the gas from a stop, and letting the car warm up for 20 minutes and i still get slippage. I thought for sure it was the clutch but one member said it would happen through all the gears if that was the case. I'm gonna clean my maf sensor today with crc cleaner and hope that works. If you correct the problem please let me know what you did that worked. Thanks, Mike

I'm exactly same miles and exactly same problem. (also dont launch control) Seems to improve as the engine comes up to temperature. I had just put it down to that.

Dont think its a clutch slip. Hope its not anyway.

Reviving this one.... I have 88k miles and Carmax replaced my SMG pump, and clutch changed about 10 months ago. It shudders/chadders in 1st and 2nd gear starts about 4 out of 5 starts from standstill. It's way worst on hills. After take off all else works smooth. S5 setting seems to decrease it 1 out of 5 starts.

Mass air is clean. Airbox has a little bit of oil in it, was told its normal. Service 2 was done in Jan.

facepalm:

Please let me know what's worked for you guys

When I changed my diff fluid from mystery brand (from PO) to OEM +FM it cleared this issue up for me.

I unplugged the battery overnight and that seemed to put it back to learning mode. But it's still there, just less noticeable. I have an appt at Pacific BMW later this month. I hope they can diagnose it once and for all.

If you guys know of anything else please let me know.

Clutch relearn / teach-in. Should have been performed when the pump was replaced. If it was and didn't adjust properly, the shop should have done it again.
