Is there any DIY necessary for changing brake pads and discs?

Have done it on one other car (non-bmw) and am unsure if there is anything I need to keep in mind.

For instance on a Rover I owned, when replacing the pads the brake cylinder needed to be pushed in, which required you to twist it while pushing...

There isnt one on adjusting the parking brake

I keep seeing threads where people ask how to do it but they always get the e-brake boot response. I want to do the proper adjustment in the rear where you have to remove the wheels and all that. Ill see how it goes...
