You guys are lucky, i had a 95' E36 328i years ago, in which the water pump failed while i was driving, i couldnt pull over rite away as there wasnt anywhere to stop other than in the middle of the road lol (country lanes in england) it had only covered 95k! Ended up replacing the full cooling system, hoses, radiator, thermo... and as a bonus, head gasket had failed also lol nice

For example, on the way home tonight i kept the heat cranked and it got to 12 o'clock position and started feeling sluggish. Where as when i first started it up and i barely had to touch it to get it to move.

also i dont know if this is related but you mentioned water pump and the pump that comes on first thing in the morning on start up, is making an awful noise about every 5 secs. sounds similar to "screetching" on a chalk board. Excuse me if i sound retarted lol but im just really not familiar with these problems since they've all been happening all the sudden over the past month.

So i got my car back 1700$ later. The ticking noise has gone away and it seems to be shifting smoother. I had a new thermostat put it but the gauge does the exact same thing and does not get completely 12 oclock. Here's what they did for 1700$, did i get burned?
1.Thermostat 78$ 2.A/C Belt 20$ 3.Alternator belt 37$ 4.Rear wheel Bearings 76$ 5.A/C Belt Tensioner Assembly 85$ 6.Alternator Tensioner Assembly 87$ 7.BMW Coolant 22$ 8.Air Pump 341$ and all oil's changed (44k fuel cleaner, tranny flush, oil filter) - AND then charged me 867$ for labor. I wish i could do this shit myself!

All right guys,
I finally did it last Friday, when it was nice weather (touched 59F). It was easier than I thought. I didn't take out the coolant, or the shield from the bottom. Just took out the fan, and replaced the thermostat. Then added the coolant (I think I dropped about half a quart). I was not able to lift the front end up for taking the air out, but I turned on the heat at max and fan lowest as described. I do not think there is any air left in there though, as it works perfect now. It was really east, I did this and the window regulator change in about 2 hours .Let me know if anyone has questions. Take care. |

Just to be safe you might want to check the coolant level a couple times in the next few days, in case 1) small air pockets getting worked out, or 2) leak introduced. Not removing the splash guard under the car just makes it more difficult to catch the coolant that gets out when you disconnect the hoses. Not that I would re-use it, but just for containing the spill/mess. Its not a good thing to put in storm drains and is sweet smelling/tasting but poisonous for pets. |

Just have a big tray (cooking tray is fine), under the hood. If it is at the right spot, hardly any coolant falls out of it. It was winter, and it was hard for me to get under the car, thats y I took the other approach . |
