DIY: Trunk Acess

hey guys, my first diy, so cut me a break!

As always, i am in no way responsible for anything that happens to your car if you follow these steps, to your own car.

1. Start in the back seat. Open the armrest.

2. Pull the leather sheet down

3. Pull out the black foam thing... and discard.

4. You should now be left with a metal plate, tack welded in about 10 spots. now procede to the trunk.

5. With the trunk open, "go figure" remove the 4 plastic screws from the back pannel.

6. then just pull the blue covor out.

7. Ok here's the hardest part. i personally used a dremel 400xrs, or what ever the name is, with the high strength metal cutting bits. i went through 1 used, and one brand new one.

8. Locate the 10 or 12 spot welds, and use your dremel to grind away the welds.

9. Once all welds are broken, kick, puch, head butt, i dont care the metal plate and it will pop out into the cabin area.

10. *Optonal* I took a sanding bit, and with my dremel i ground down the corners and sharp edges, and ran a piece of clear tube over the area, to prevent cuts or whatnot.

thinking about doing a soundsystem upgrade. but....i know nothing of audio electronics... so 2 subs, something else, and some sick looking blacklight neons!

you dont think that neons in the trunk, or some sort of lighting to go along with the system would look good?

Can anyone comment as to whether doing this actually increases road noise inside the cabin?

People talk about how well sealed the cabin is when talking about subs located in the trunk. I have been thinking about doing this to open up the amount of bass from the trunk, but am concerned about increased road noise.

personally, i have NOT noticed any increse in road noise. and even if you did, your going to be putting a sub or something in so that would sort-of counter-act it no?

Yeah, but I'm debating whether to try and mount the sub direct in the ski pass in IB or have it in the actual trunk in an enclosure with the ski pass hole just allowing bass to enter the cabin.

Have you done anything with a sub install after you knocked your ski pass out?

What if you do not have the armrest in the back seat (upper)?

i have not decided on a sound system, and as for the lack of arm rest, ive never owned a bmw that hasnt had one so i cant say. sorry

Is there anyway to turn this into something like for putting your skiis though? I don't have the cold weather package so, I lack the folding seats. Every car I have had before this had them standard... grr.

I can't go skiing with my ZHP. Not that the tires are great in the winter anyway. But. Id like to have the option!

I have a 323i which came stock with no ski hole and no rear armrest.

I knocked out the steel plate, thus opening up the hole.

And I purchased a used rear bench seat /w backing & armrest on the forum here.

And bam... I now have a rear armrest and ski hole.

The rear seat backing w/ armrest and without armrest both have the same fitment. Pop out old seat with no armrest and pop new one in with armrest.

I would hate to get my arm cut by those sharp edges. But I have a one piece rear seat.

This is the greatest thing I found all day. I have two HUGE subs and I always have to leave one of the seats down to let some of that moving air and sound out. Of course, when I park the car I have to put the seat up so no one sees the system and breaks my window. Then when I get in I forget to pop the trunk and put the seat back down. This solves everything. Thanks to the poster!!

i have the exact same problem. plan on cutting this thing out as soon as i get home. no more folded down back seat. thanx
