Upgrade to aftermarket stereo or AUX interface for business class stereo?

I know this could have gone in a particular forum, but with time limited I'm trying to get an idea of what I should do by today

[main idea is to get my ipod connected ..BT = even better (illegal to talk and hold phone while driving in my state)]

I have three choices:

Keep business cd player and do a DIY mod:

Keep business cd player and get a usa-spec adapter:

Upgrade to an aftermarket stereo:
Any suggestions for something that makes the stock e46 speakers shine? something that doesn't look so bad with our beautiful amber interior lighting?

obviously the DIY route is simple, cheap and works, which I like.. the usa-spec adapter is cool too, the aftermarket stereo might have the chance of making my stock speakers sound even better, and would open the opportunity for BT connectivity.
