The cons for each...are that they are both the slowest models in the lineup. If that's your goal...go for the 525. It will be EVEN slower. For the SAME price...I would go with the 525

Your buying a BMW, maintainence will be generally the same for both of those cars. But, I would look for a 328 over the 323.

ok new lineup. 328ci vs 525i. I was thinking 3 series and 5 series is a whole different thing

The 5er is obviously more luxury while the 3er is more sporty. I would say go with the 328 since im e46 bias

f*** the 323/328, nowadays you really need to look 2001+ because of serious issues (search no reverse, subframe). otherwise go with the 5series

edit--- im not in any way saying that 01-03 dont have the stated issues, but the entry models are more prone..

stay away from 99's and 00's if you can.. statistically they make the highest numbers in subframe failure. also stay away from automatic/steptronics if you don't mind driving stick. The auto/step transmissions are fragile and will fail sooner or later. One more thing, if the car is close to 100k, it needs a cooling system overhaul which you'll have to do unless the prior owner had it done. I'd say find a decent '01 325ci or 330ci 5spd with ~90k miles and do the cooling system yourself. will cost you about 300-400 bucks and you'll be fine for a long time.

Trust me, I've owned 2 e46s (first '00 323i step, now '01 330ci 5spd) and I know most of their problems.

alright but is the 525 slower than the 328ci? i thought since its 5 series it automatically has more power... idk im thinking the 5 series i like the whole roomy feel and luxury feel but the year i want looks a little too dated

Spot on.
I've owned 2 e46s (first 2001 325Ci 5spd, now 2004 330Ci 6spd) and (I've been on here for 3 years =) I know most of their problems.

Go for 325ci or 330ci with later M54 engine. Newer technology, better build, strengthened subframe and so on.
