E36 325iS vs E36 M3

I'm still in the process of trying to locate a good project car that isn't too expensive, in hopes that I can convince the wife to let me buy it. Then I'd modify the crap out of it. The goal is to get a car (BMW) for under $10k.
I've been considering getting an E36 M3, but I'm also looking at the E36 325iS as an option. (There are virtually no 328iS in manual transmission anywhere)

I know that the power is lacking compared to the M3, but a supercharger would get the 325iS up to 300BHP with 260lb-ft of torque.
Aside from power and engine size, what are the major differences between the two cars?
This would be built up to be primarily a show car, but also as a track car.
Any other models to consider?
Please feel free to pass along any thoughts you have on the matter.

TIA!

In order to built it for a show and track car your going to need ALOT of money. Id go with M3 but that would be more money.

This is why I'm looking at a cheaper car on the front end of the deal instead of trying to focus on an E9x. It might be more "acceptable" and feasible for me.

I totally agree with you Is not really that expensive... And the difference in performance is really noticeable. You can find a good one for $6000 or $7000... They are at the bottom of value depreciation right now.

let's say you get 325is for 2g and spend 2g on it which is easy. that's twice the value of the car.
I mean if you are going to keep it forever, that's fine but if you are going to sell it later, it will be very painful

Can you guys explain to me why the S50/OBD-1 is better than the 1996+ S52/OBD-2? I've heard they're better before and never got a reason.

in my opinion it is better for two reasons only....
1. the s50 has an iron block vs the s52 with an aluminum block...... iron is almost bullet proof...specially if you are going to boost it.
2. the s50/m50's have a better flowing intake than the obdII cars.

as far as the body goes, they are identical aside from mirros, bumpers, and side skirts. oh and the "m" emblems. lol
