it's supposed to make the car quieter at lower RPMs and at idle. My facelift 325i has it too. The golf tee mod tell you how to remove the tub and plug it with a golf tee.

why did I ask this valve ? because I want electrical cut-off for my 330i. Electrical cut-off valves are expensive , they require more work and I prefer always stock parts. So I want to have electrically operated loud and quite muffler , can we operate this valve with electrical switch ?
I found this figure. I think M54 330i have the same shape. |

Mine is fully open at idle. I was driving behind a 330CiC and it was open at idle too(car at a standstill). But when the driver moved off (not too fast) it started to close. I guess it would re-open at some point later.

Infact I need quite exhaust at idle speed and sport sound at higher (3000+) rpm... Is there any reasonable solution for street car ?

US 330's have it, and 6 cylinder (ie 2 exhaust) euro's have it.
Man the M52TU muffler is stupidly designed, time to cut mine off. Buy a Aston Martin? You'd be hard pressed to find an exhaust for the E46 that had a custom actuator set up built in to do what you want... If you got headers and used the stock muffler you'd be able to benefit from the stock butterfly valve that opens and closes while still increasing sound

Are you sure someone didn't slap a 325 badge on your 330?
Seriously though, ugh I thought I had it down which cars came with them. It seems pretty inconsistant. Maybe if your VIN ends in an even number you get a clutch stop, and if it ends in a prime number you get a butterfly valve.

That's the opposite of mine. '02 330i. Just checked it with the engine off, and it was fully open. I started the engine and checked it again at idle, and it was fully closed. I did try the golf tee mod for a while and found that the exhaust tone at low rpms was deeper, but being an older guy, I prefer a quieter and mellower sound, so I hooked the hose back up.

After applying the golf tee mod, are you sure the flap is fully open at idle? The reason I ask is because when I first tried it, I found that my flap remained closed because it was not rotating freely, probably due to corrosion in the hinge, which means that it was probably stuck closed even when I was doing high rpms on the road. I sprayed some WD-40 up into the hinged area and worked it opened and closed until it loosened up.

This may be the same reason for my first drive , I noticed the difference after my first trial....
