Question on Tire Size

My car has 205 x 50 as its OEM size. When I check Tire Rack or Discount Tire for optional sizes in 17 inch tires, they both move down to 45 sidewalls. I would like a wider tire but still would like to keep the 50 sidewall for added protection from our lousy Indiana roads. Is there a reason that you should not get 225 x 50 tires for my car?

205 x 50 is usually what comes on the factory 16" wheels, is that what you have?

The reason why the profile decreases to a 45 with a 225 is because you need to decrease the aspect ratio to maintain the same overall rolling diameter so that you're speedometer will be accurate.

Like what Chris said, a wider tire with a lower aspect ratio will give the same sidewall height. It's a ratio of the width, not a set sidewall height.

Thanks for the info. I have 17 inch wheels, but it appears from what you are telling me I will need to go with the 45 sidewalls to get a wider tire in the 17 inch size.

45 series is correct, 235/45/17 would be your best bet

the correct 17 inch size is actually 225/45/17 and it has exactly the same sidewall as 205/50/17
Here is a good tool for calculating sizes - http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

FYI, 235/45 is a great upgrade and causes zero problems

What kind of upgrade? I would think weight would start to become a real issue with a tire this wide.

Upgrade as in wider tire for a little more grip and a little better look. Weight won't become a big issue. But as they said above 225/45/17 is the correct size because it is OEM recommended, but 235's won't hurt a thing.

Agreed, and well stated.
