Is it possible to install windows 7 (64 bit) on a windows vista (32 bit machine?) pix

I thought it wasn't possible... but when I went to go buy the student edition.. I get this message:

Note: If your goal is to install the 64-bit version of Windows 7 on a computer running Windows XP or Windows Vista 32-bit, you will need to include the Backup DVD with your Order and install Windows 7 using this DVD media.

Which makes me think it is! So I go ahead and buy the 64 bit OS.... but then later on I'm thinking.... wait a minute....

anyone know?

there is no reason to use the 64b version. Nothing worthwhile supports 64b.

*Seems* like it's suggesting that 7 will wipe your drive and install a clean copy, which will then go and restore data from/with the Backup DVD. As far as the machine is concerned, as long as the CPU is 64-bit, you can install either or (32/64bit OS).

Oh, and BTW, step into the 21st century and go to a 64 bit system -- there's almost no reason whatsoever to have a 32-bit OS anymore, as they all include 32-bit extensions for non-64-bit software.

first you need to make sure your processor can support 64bit OS. Second, the note is saying that you cannot just "upgrade" from a 32bit OS to a 64bit Win 7, you need the full disk and you need to do a clean install. The ad you posted is for the "upgrade", not the Full disk.

your kidding right?

so a 32bit version supports up t 3GB or ram. if you put more in it wont "see" an d hence it wont use it. a 64 bit version allows you to use up to 128GB or ram (i think...may even be higher)

64 bit OP's use a 64 bit words to transfer data fastehr then the normal 32 bit word.

there are many different kinds of software optimized to take advantage of a 64 bit systems processing power. furthermore almost all of the multicore processors have firmware that is considerable more efficient on a 64 bit system.

however most of this software is pro grade..... ie. CS4, many modeling programs(autocad, labview, comsol, ansys) that are used for research, Vegas 9 is 64 bit optimized.

if oyu have 4 GB or ram or more you have to run a 64 bit system to take advantage o the hardware you already paid for......

you could perform a full clean install with upgrade media.
