Question Steering angle sensor replacement on 2000 323i

I have 2000 BMW 323i on which the ASC light was always amber (this car had a water damage 3-4 years ago and the whole electronics had been replaced by the previous owner). I want it to work properly and the amber light to go away.
So I took it to BMW dealership for the diagnostics and it showed up that the steering angle sensor is defective. They recommend a replacement. It was quoted about $350 for part + about $350 labor (which is not a final due to the sensor coding and potential car software upgrade issues).
Can I do it at any mechanic shop + the electrician who has the BMW computer or it has to be the BMW dealership due to coding issues?
I bought already a used sensor from the local junk yard for $100.
Now trying to find out everything important related to the replacement, any hints on calibration coding etc...
Much appreciated.

Fit the sensor yourself then take it to dealer to get it calibrated.
Should not be more than 45 min labour.
