My Ride: Pheonix Yellow M3!!!
New Member Ready to Buy, Advice Please!!

Whats up everyone. I am looking to buy my first M3 really soon. I am very interested in one in particular on my list. Its a LSB w/ grey 2003 with 66k mi. Manual. Priced for $23,900. Car looks to be very clean from the pic. The car is in another state, so I'd be flying there and driving home if I decide on it. I may be flying there this weekend. In the meantime, I am checking the carfax and also finding out if its had inspection II. What else should I do in the meantime guys? This PPI thing. I understand thats important also. What do I need in order to do that?
Oh and lastly, is 66k mi too many? Thanks for the help in advance!!!!

66k isn't too many miles as long as it has a proper maintenance history. It should have had Inspection II done approximately 16k miles ago, depending on how it's been driven, and since then at least one oil change. Also make sure that it has had ALL it's maintenance done properly (ie Inspection I, oil changes at LEAST every 15k, by now probably brake pads/rotos, replaced belts, RTABs, FCABs, etc.). If it doesn't have a proper maintenance history, walk away. It will be a bigger headache down the road.

For a PPI you need a BMW dealership, or equivalent independent garage that can do a multi-point inspection. Ask a lot of questions, check out the condition of the tires, engine bay, all the little things to get an idea how this M was treated.

thats good stuff. thanks a lot. I'll head over to a local dealer after work to see if I can get some assistance with the PPI. I just need the VIN# right?

My Ride: 2002 M3 Vert
Great color. I'm aslo a new onwer, just picked up a 2002 M3 vert with 12,000 miles on it. It was through a dealer so I was able to get a 3 year warranty too. Post up pics when you get it.

My Ride: 02 M3 vert smg :(
make sure you have a way to get home if you need to back out... If the seller knows you've flown there he's got you by the proverbial balls. That happened to me when i bought mine... the guy knew i was driving over 100 miles and he wouldnt negotiate much... paid 17000 for mine... 2002 m3 convertible with 50k (smg).

best of luck

thats a pretty good price.

to the OP, Drive the car, make sure there are no odd noises and that the car drives normally. Look for signs of parts being replaced or painted. Check and see if the front fender, hood, and trunk lid screws have been turned; this is a sign the parts have been removed, replaced, and/or painted. If everything checks out fine and you would buy the car take it for a PPI.

a PPI is when you take the car to a mechanic and they look over the whole car. Your best bet is to take it to a BMW dealer because you can ask them if the Inspection I and Inspection II has been done and if there are any open recalls on the car. You can also have them inspect the sub frame, while its there.

After the dealer gives you the run around on what the car needs, then negotiate a price.
