stuck in first, now car wont start

ok, so here's what happened...

was driving down the road, stopped at some traffic lights then took off when they went green. my 328i decided it didnt want to shift out of 1st gear (it's an auto), so i tried to put into steptronic and shift manually. when i did, the 'M' came up on the dash but no gear number. I was unable to shift gears in steptronic too. I then pulled down a side street and turned the car off. when i tried to start it back up, no deal. turn the key and nothing happens. it's like the car thinks it's stuck in gear and wont start because i'm not in drive or neutral. I had to get towed unfortauntely, but was able to roll the car in neutral so wasnt stuck in gear. battery is ok, no probs there.

does anyone have any ideas on what the problem might be???? mechanic is at a loss and has to take the car to bmw for further investigation.

Disconnect the battery and retry it.

apparently didnt work (it's at the mechanic). they think it's the engine management unit?

so after 2 weeks without my car, finally got it back. the transmission management unit was fried. replaced now but urgh... the steptronic doesnt work now!!!!! i move the selector into steptronic mode and the car stays in drive (dash got D for drive instead of M for manual mode).

will it ever end!!!

i'm hoping its just a reprogramming step they forgot, like forgot to enable steptronic stuff or something?!

you should have instantly converted to manual when that happened. f*ck steptronic. these gay little problems will persist forever.

hopefully it's just a programming issue...
