Hello everybody. I recently started to notice a very light knocking sound coming from the engine. You can only hear it when you stand behind the doors, but when you stand in front of the car, nothing. Also i have to top off my oil like every 2-3 weeks. Im running on castrol full synthetic 5w-30
This could be a crack on the exhaust pipes that is causing this resonating sound. All BMW's (e46's at least) have this sound, very lightly, like a thumping, and is normal. Actual knocking, as in hoarse metallic sounds is probably the lifters in the engine.
How much oil are you putting in? Sounds like an exhaust issue, but id want to hear it from down below to make sure its not a bearing starting to go south.
I have to add a quarter because the sensor turns on. I heard it might be that the piston rings are worn out, could that be a possibility?
