How frequently do you drop the top?

Hey guys, new Vert owner as of Dec 1. In prep for warmer weather, I wanted to survey other vert owners on their practices regarding dropping the top... specifically, during warm weather months, do you keep the top down, do you park it with the top down in a public parking place? Or do you always raise the top to secure the car? I am looking to add the alarm system to mine... thinking that if properly armed, it might be OK to leave the top down for short periods when parked? Looking for advice and best practices!! I'd prefer to limit the number of reps on the top mechanism as reasonable. Thanks in advance!

Welcome!
I leave my top down if I can find shade. I'm in Tx so 120 in the sun is not a fun experience. Top up or down NEVER leave anything visible in the car. Pen, toothbrush, CD... nothing is secure. The alarm is anemic at best and anybody with a knife can get in through the top grab something and leave, leaving you with a $3,000 bill to replace the top.

hope that helps.

For a quick trip somewhere, the top can stay up. Otherwise, down it goes, even when parked, in a shady spot.

I drop the top in the warm weather, but i put it up when I park. I don't want bird droppings, people, or sudden rain in the car.

I usually only take the car out of the garage when I can have the top down. If taking it on a trip and using the Interstate highways on a long trip, I keep the top up and if I am going to be parking the car for a while on a trip, I keep the top up.

Locally, when I have the car out on a nice evening and be leaving the car, I will typically use the cockpit cover to keep dew off the interior or use the cover during the day when the sun is hot and I won't be in the car for a while.

It sleeps in the garage with top down (covered)...so I really only take it out when its nice out...I park out of the sun pretty much anywhere. Nothing visible to steal...just leave out close to front of where ever I am going.

I have been broken into. And the door was unlocked! Broke the rear quarter window.

Now I leave nothing inside.

Drive the car almost every day, and 320 days top down last year (estimate). Replaced the interior recently because it had faded completely.

I have a 2001 330cic and live in SF, try to raise and lower the top as little as possible to keep the moving parts from failing. When I do drop the top I usually leave it down for a few days. When I leave it, I up all the windows and never leave anything visible in it. Haven't had any problems yet. I also have read it's better to store the top up then down (folding the material for long periods causes fabric fatigue). I clean and waterproof (with UV block) every year and lubricate the moving parts every 4 or 5 years. Top is in perfect shape after 15 years. I guess common sense when leaving it open and maintenance is the key.

Thank you BlueMW, that info is invaluable to me! My '04 is obviously 13 years old (imported 4/4/04) and the top is really good, but I want to do all the right things to maintain it. I have read all the forum posts on common issues and will be ready if any of them occur, but prevention is the key. Thanks for your insight!

What product do you use to clean and waterproof?

I bought two products from Renovo, a cleaner and a water proofer....but after months still without using them.

I never park my car on street without the roof, the system works perfectly and is designed to open/close the roof several times per day during years.

In the summer months I have mine down on a daily basis unless its raining, I only leave the roof down if parking for a short time! but I close the windows, if leaving it for longer I put the roof up. I clean my roof twice a year and re-proof it every year and I use 'RaggTopp' cleaner and proofer. I also vacuum the roof regularly as it picks up a lot of road dust as you will know by your interior when driving topless.

As often as possible. At night I have the option of parking in my garage and I can keep the top down indefinitely. However, I don't always enjoy driving around with the top down in blazing hot or humid weather during the day, or night. When that happens the top goes up and the A/C comes on.

I put it down a few days a week in the warmer months. My kids love riding in the car with the top down. If I am driving on a highway I prefer the top up. I have the hardtop for winter and the colder months. I leave that on for about 8 months of the year.

I had mine down last week when we had a 65 degree day. It was nice. 18 hours later we had 9 inches of snow.

For me, almost always as a rule, when I'm away from the car, the top is up. I just replaced the hydro pump, but I bought my vert used so I'm doing what deferred maintenance is needed by the previous owner. (I've had 2 other verts) I close it primarily to keep out bird poop, pollen, leaves, etc. and when down the shore it keeps the salty mist that is always in the air out. BUT, 50°or warmer and the top goes down, just make sure you have the rear wind screen to keep the cabin warm with the heat on and windows up.

My E46 is my practical daily driver car. I always think 'I'm gonna put the top down to go to work' OR 'I'll put it down when i leave the office'. Most of the time, it slips my mind by the time I get out to the car and I don't do it. However, I have four other convertibles (two seater play cars) and their tops are always down.

I've had several "topless" days recently but was unable to drop it since I've got my hardtop on as I currently have nowhere to store it.

That's the reason why I don't own a hardtop
