Budget Supercharged "Alpina" Frankenstein Sedan Build

One day, I decided to buy a single VANOS M52B28 on Craigslist. I figured it'd have more guts than my M54B25, and that I could tune my DME to work with the single VANOS. Was for a decent price, and turned over. Picked it up and threw it in the trunk of the Nissan S12 hatchback I had at the time.

I wasn't sure what I was going to do with it yet. I pondered using it for a turbocharged build eventually, just throwing it into my E46 sedan as is, or maybe turning it into an S52. After letting it sit around for a while, I finally settled on making an S52/Alpina E5 Frankenstein thing from it. Got a set of S52 pistons, and an S52/M54B30 crankshaft.

"Why make an S52? Why not just get an S54?" I wanted something lower maintenance than an S54, but with more grunt and capability than an M54, and a good old cast iron block. And I didn't have the money for an S54. The M52 long block cost me over 10 times less than an S54 would have (not counting my later S52 piston and crank acquisition). S54 swaps are seen on occasion. How often does one see a single VANOS engine in an E46?

The E46 Alpina B3S uses a modified version of the S52B32 US-market engine, and has a displacement of 3.4 liters. I'm going to have something very similar but 3.2 liters. E46 Alpinas were never sold in the US, so I will have something peculiar.

"But what if I regret spending time, effort, and money on all of this only to have somethings still below a stock S54 in performance?" I thought. I then searched again for the Hyde Motorworks Toyota SC14 supercharger brackets for M5X engines, which I had heard about before. Bought the blueprints, and picked up a Toyota SC14/Ogura TX15 supercharger. The charger has around the same displacement as an Eaton M90 blower, and has a clutched pulley (like an AC compressor), meaning I can wire it to a switch, to turn the supercharger on and off.

Finally got around to getting the block machined to S52 spec.

Some general specs while I get around to further updating the post and adding more info/photos:

-Single VANOS "M52B32" engine
-M54B30 intake cam
-Toyota SC14 supercharger with Hyde Motorworks mounting brackets
-M50 manifold with idle air control valve delete
-Siemens MS43 engine management
-MLS head gasket
-All ARP hardware
-Grant piston rings

Stay tuned for more photos and updates!

Well this should be highly interesting build.
Pretty wild idea, can't wait to see it executed.

The oil pump that will be used for the build. It's an M50 oil pump with the cover machined down, and with the shaft (with M50 gear swapped on) and sprocket from a Greg Smith Racing M54 oil pump. Wanted to avoid any fear of the oil pump nut backing off, since the S52 crank is the same as the M54B30 crank and therefore suffers from the same harmonic issues (although not as dramatically in the cast iron block).
