They proved that they could entangle photons at that distance but it doesn't allow for a means of communication. Think about it like this: you have a black ball and a white ball in two separate boxes but don't know which is in which box. You take one box to Mexico and open it and it's the black ball. You now know that the white ball is in the other box, but that doesn't allow you to pass information back and forth, it only allows you to know information about the other ball.

I don't know why the media keeps talking about entanglement for communication because it's constantly debunked.

He spoke at my school in undergrad, and while interesting, he's a prick. In front of a lot of people he mocked the field of genetics when a PhD genetics student asked him a question. A lot of physicists are arrogant, but he takes the cake.
