2001 330ci rear end clunk / creak

My car has a noise coming from the rear end. I can only hear it when driving in reverse, driving slowly in 1st and 2nd gear and while making tight turns. It doesn't happen when hitting bumps or pushing up and down on the car.

I thought it might be the rear shock mount, but it doesn't seem to be from the video that I took. The noise goes away when it's wet. It's also intermittent, it doesn't happen all the time.

I greased the rear sway bar mounts and checked everything in the rear. I can't figure out where the noise is coming from.

I'm thinking it might be the rear trailing arm bushing. Does anyone have any insight?

Thanks

My 330 was clunking from the rear.
Check the subframe for cracks.
I changed the diff bushes, that fixed the problem.
Then the noise came back, I checked the subframe bolts ( 4 bolts that connect the subframe to the car) the rear left bolt was loose. I tightened it up half a turn and that fixed the problem.
Good luck

U joints can creak when worn. Autos usually wear the fronts first, manuals wear the rear.

I definitely need to replace the diff bushings. One of them is very visibly cracked. I don't think it's the cause of this noise though.

I'll take a look at the subframe bolts and see if they are all tightened down. Maybe the subframe to the car bushings have worn slightly in the past 16 years, which cause a small movement and noise. If that is the case, I can see how tightening them would get rid of the noise.

I'm hoping where the subframe mounts is not cracked. I looked and could not see any cracks, but I know they can be hidden under the sheet metal in the trunk.

Let us know because Im having a similar issue. Ill be driving forward, come to a stop and park. When Im leaving my house in the morning and am backing down my hill Illl rest my foot on the brake and hear a pop/whack noise. Except mine sounds like it comes from the front end of the car.

However it makes no sense for the front end to be making this noise. Ive had new control arms put in and I replaced the lower control arm bushing as well. Not much left up front to replace. Ive also had 2 of the 3 rear diff bushings changed as well.

Im about ready to remove my subframe, get rid of any rust, repaint, replace all rear bushings and thrown in an LSD while Ive got it apart, then have my brother weld in the rear reinforcement plates. Not a bad idea but Id rather spend my time putting a new clutch and 6speed in my e36 to get that car back on the road.
