Auxiliary Fan and Air Conditioning

I have a 2000 BMW 323Ci who has never had functional air conditioning in the vehicle. I have now decided to fix the air conditioning but I am having trouble understanding the A/C Compressor Clutch engagement requirements since I hear different things from different posts. I understand the car needs the following as stated by Sansho at 12-13-2013, 05:52 PM:
- Coolant outlet temperature (lower radiator hose sensor)
- Calculated (by the ECM) catalyst temperature
- Vehicle speed
- Battery voltage
- Air Conditioning pressure (calculated by IHKA)

I have also heard that a functional ambient temperature sensor is required since the -44 Deg error comes up without it, preventing the A/C to work. I have placed an order for this as mine is completely absent from the vehicle.

My car has both the mechanical and the auxiliary fans. My main question that I'm looking to answer is whether or not the Auxiliary Fan is required in order to make the A/C work, since mine currently never seems to be working. I came to this conclusion by lowering the temperature on climate control, pressing the A/C button, and blasting the air and still have no spinning on the fan.

If anyone has any other useful details/specifications regarding the A/C & Auxiliary fan it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Yes. The aux fan needs to be working to permit AC operation

My ambient air temp sensor got ripped off by driving through a pile of snow. I have an extra just never got around to putting it on. My ac works fine without it btw

Ahhh, Okay thank you! I will have to get started diagnosing and fixing the AUX fan then. I really appreciate the pdf you attached to your post.

And really? Dang, well I already ordered the parts, so I may as well install it in.

Thank you!
