If he gets both, at least get one of them in a different color so as to diversify usage.

I am kinda leaning Strand as the walnut is a bit of a dressed down look over say the dark brown Strands I own or the black 5th aves. The walnut color seems to lend itself to dressing slightly down a bit better, as such I think the Strand makes the most sense.

The wife is not a Strand fan and likes the 5th ave. Seems like the plainer shoes tend to wrinkle a bit, the black doesn't show that but I am afraid the walnut would.

I have the Chelsea boot in walnut, don't love the huge swath of color that much--kinda looks orange-y.

Lucas, yea agree on the colors!

Suits: not a fan of stripes.

Shoes: I like the 5thAves. I have a pair in brown calf. I also like the Strands but think the 5thAves are a little less flashy.

Went with the Walnut Strands. Considering the Higgins Mills boots now. Good price for them at $195. The First Ave dress boots are nice as well, could be a good pickup for the snowy winters we have had the past few years.

I definitely want some Higgins Mill boots. I'm going to wait it out and get them from that ebay reseller for like $100 though.

http://www.brooksbrothers.com/Peal-C...s=56&cgid=0494

picked up this pair during a special sale a month ago for under $300
price is back up to $388 now in the clearance section

i like them
i don't have any other "split toe" shoes so they don't overlap (unlike my 239402380283 pairs of cap toes)
but haven't decided if i will keep or not

Finally made it to suitsupply to try on the tuxedo
It looks good and fits well ... but I hate the cheap looking lapels
It should have been a plain satin finish... not the cheap looking "corduroy"-like grooved fabric
I am going to have to pass on it

It's too bad because the tuxedo can be purchased as separates so I can pair the 40 jacket with 42 pants and not have the super tight pants dilemma that is common for suitsupply

That's a bummer about the lapels. Good luck in your tuxedo search!

Good choice with the strands. They are one of the most versatile shoes AE has to offer especially in the warmer months. They look great with jeans and equally as good with lighter colored pants/suits.

Once the weather turns, think about getting a more conservative shoe in either brown or oxblood to offset the casual-ability of the strand

Well I swung and missed on my first try with AE factory seconds. Ordered the Fifth Avenue boots during their 2nd flash sale, were $237 shipped. Got them last week and one of them is damn near perfect, small scuff that I got rid of with a bit of polish. The second one had a weird film on the forefoot area, looked like left over unbuffed polish and was a bit rough to the touch. Hoped i could bring it back to life with a good polishing. Put some polish on, hit it with the horsehair and the black coating started coming off in chunks! Not sure what happened but somewhere in the treatment process it got effed up. Sending them back today.

In the mean time I found a set of the same boots from everyone's favorite ebay guy in SC. He was asking $190 for them and listed as worn inside once. Offered $140 and he took it so I got them for $152 shipped. Showed up yesterday, they are marked with a "no warranty" so were also apparently factory seconds, but I can't find a damn thing wrong with them. Pretty happy to get them in better shape for $90 less!

Here is a pic. Need a bit of breaking in and maybe a quick polish but pretty comfy so far.

It takes a couple weeks for flesh eating fungus to appear.
