Question Loss of heat from vents when I turn the steering wheel.

When I turn my steering wheel, I lose heat from the vents. Is that normal? I've never had that in a car before. I do have a bit of a leak from my PS pump, and a new HCV. Other than that, and the fact that a belt is attached to the A/c, I'm not sure what the correlation would be between the two.

Perhaps it has to do with the water pump and the energy from the motion of the belts when the wheel is turned.

Need to isolate whether the problem is related to the heater control valve or elsewhere.

Does it behave the same when the car is moving and at standstill?

Does it change with different RPMs?

Does the heat come back if you raise the thermostat temp setting?

One way to diagnose this would be with INPA, if you have that set up. You could monitor the status of the various IHKA sensors and controls to see if they are changing when turning the wheel.

Loss of heat from vents when I turn the steering wheel.

The heat only leaves upon turning and is most noticeable on interstate off ramps. Once the wheel is strait the heat returns. This does not happen at any particular rpm or while parked whilst I turn the wheel. I keep the heat usually on its highest setting at the lowest fan speed. Neither the A or the A with the circle arrows are engaged on the climate control head unit. The fan never cuts off but I can still feel it blow cooler air when the wheel is turned to take a new street, or as mentioned, an off ramp from the highway. The HCV was installed new in September and is genuine BMW.

Thats a very interesting issue you're having - to add to the "you know you're an e46 fanatic when..." thread..... you know when you notice this type of thing, and make the connection between it and the turning, haha. Best of luck find a solution, I'm interested to see what was/is causing this issue!
