'03 Touring... purchased from a fellow E46 Fanatics member

This is a story about the power of the community on this forum.

Conclusion of the story: Yesterday I took delivery of an '03 325xiT. It's in absolutely fantastic condition, and I'm elated.

CHAPTER 1
The story begins with years of searching for the right vehicle. I am married, and will soon be a father, so I needed something with room to grow. I tested anything from Subaru Outbacks/Foresters, to Minivans *shudder*, to Benz Wagons... and then it dawned on me that the BMW Touring was the one.

But which Touring?

CHAPTER 2
This initiated a deep search into the world of Tourings, and I ended up discovering this forum. Thank god. I spent hours reading anything and everything I could... ESPECIALLY KaktusJaque's invaluable Buyer's Guide.

I am a self-declared noob... when I read that guide, and began to really appreciate the knowledge and enthusiasm on these forums, I knew that the E46 Touring was the car I must buy. An E91 just would not do!

CHAPTER 3
Hours on Autotrader, Ebay, Craigslist. I got very excited when I fount a very low mileage MT for sale at a dealership, contacted them, began to arrange for a PPI... only to run the VIN and discover that the engine was a risky SULEV. Pass. Many thank yous again to KaktusJaque!

I test drove E46 Tourings at dealerships... but every experience with a dealer left me feeling, um, icky. There was always some kind of hustle happening. Or something I felt wasn't right about the car.

I reached out to KaktusJaque and NY area user SolidJake for insight, and they were incredibly helpful. I am very grateful to them both!

CHAPTER 4
I found user djdonis' '03 Touring for sale. He sent me an excel file of all of the work he had done on the vehicle. He was very organized, responsive, honest and helpful.

We worked out a PPI, which he handled for me quickly and efficiently. He even continued to do work on the vehicle to make sure some lingering issues were resolved. I took him at his word, and his word was good. Thank you, DJ!

We agreed on price, I wired him the money, he overnighted the title, and that day I arranged for vehicle shipment. 24 hours later, the vehicle arrived... and it is exactly as DJ described. Excellent condition.

A guy on the street even asked me if it's a brand new car! Ha! I told him it was over 10 years old, and he didn't believe me. True story.

CONCLUSION
No, it's not MT or RWD, but it's in absolutely fantastic condition for 90k miles, and it's my first E46, so to say that I am happy is an aggressive understatement.

The purpose of this post is:

a) To thank the E46 community at large, KaktusJaque and SolidJake in particular, and most importantly djdonis.

b) To make a recommendation to anyone who's thinking of purchasing a vehicle to spend time engaging with this community. There are no guarantees, of course, but my experience has been rewarding.

I'm posting one pic of the car, which I acknowledge is unflattering. We take her out for a maiden voyage this weekend, and I will post better pictures soon.

Extra effort and research always pays off.

Might suggest some legal tint on the windows, maybe a bit darker in the rear like SUV privacy glass if you will be hauling kids.

Helps reduce the sun in their eyes and one their skin.

Keep on top of the front axles, they will need to be replaced sometime in the future, use GKN axles from ECS Tuning or other vendors.

You will be happy you have an xi once the snow comes around, these cars do quite well in the snow.

If the GM5 relays for the door locks have not been replaced, plan to do this as PM, no since being locked in or out of your car. See www.bmwgm5.com.

If the fuel pump is original, replace it and the fuel filter - http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=929501

Good luck and enjoy

I don't think he needs to worry about anything on the undercarriage for the next 60k-80k miles at least, including the GKN that were installed couple months ago.

I took me a month and a lot of driving to go and find the right E46. I didn't settle until I found the right one.

Glad you found your car my friend!
