Engine Troubles

Hi folks,

I have a 2001 318ci (E46, with N42B20 engine). Recently I was performing some routine maintenance on the car (droplinks, brakes, springs etc), and after a short drive, it felt as though it had entered the dreaded 'limp mode'. Sounding as if it was badly misfiring, I hoped it was possibly just issues with the coil pack. I took it to a local garage, and he gave me a list of the codes. Mechanic was of the opinion that a replacement engine would be cheaper than a repair. He mentioned that the problems were linked to the variable valve control unit. However, he also admitted that he is not a specialist when it comes to BMW's.

Around 3 years ago, I had similar issues with the car. I took it in to a 'recommended' mechanic. To cut a long story short, he told me he had to strip the engine and repair the camshaft, and valvetronic system and charged me around 900 for the privilege. Although the car was fine, he never gave me a receipt for the work done, and I had to take his word for it!

I am aware that the N42 is not BM's finest engine, but need advice on how best to proceed. Below is a list of codes, I have ruled out the basics like cam and crank angle sensors as local mechanic tried all these and the problems still persisted.

The codes included;
2782 Camshaft Sensor Exhaust
27BB Camshaft Control Exhaust
27C1 Master Cam Sensor
2781 Camshaft Sensor Inl.
274E Misfire Detection Summation Error
2744 Misfire 3rd Ignition Order
2789 Badway Detection (Rough idling detection)
2742 Misfire 1st Ignition Order
2743 Misfire 2nd Ignition Order

What I would like to know is, has anyone faced similar issues, and was it repairable at a reasonable cost?

The car still runs, however is severely lacking power. Driving it home from the garage, it cut out on me when stopping at lights etc, and struggled to get past 3000 revs with foot to the floor. 0-60 would have taken me roughly 8.4 days!

Really do not want to have to scrap the car, everything else is in great condition/ working order...and yes, I realise this is pointless if the engine is beyond repair!

Today I started the car, opened the bonnet and smoke was coming out of somewhere below/ near the oil filler side of the engine, under a round silver device. (sorry I don't know what it's called yet). Hopefully there is a leaky hose somewhere and its causing these codes to appear, although I doubt it would be that simple.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Jim

Hi Davers,

Well I took it for a full diagnostic and was basically told to scrap the car. Indy specialist said it would be too expensive to fix and quoted me 15-16 hours labour at 47 per hour! That was just to try to get to the bottom of it.
There appears to be a lot of oil getting into the spark plugs/ ignition coils part of the engine and he said oil could be coming from anywhere! So...it for sale as a full car for spares or repair.

Thanks for your reply, I'm devastated lol.

Jim.
