Cool recurring coolant leak problem

hi , new to the forum, thought i'd search for the same problem as mine before posting myself,
so here i am, hello. lol
i searched for and read a lot on this forum before i posted.
anyway long story short. i bought a 316 52 plate e46.
after only a few weeks i had coolant leakage from somewhere,
i couldn't find the problem, but i kept on topping it up.
i'd maybe have to top it off every 2/3 days, say every 100 miles or so.
then its loosing more coolant , and quicker. then overheating,
i had a crack in the expantion tank. so i got that replaced,
was still happening, over heating and leaking, had water pump replaced,
still problem remained, had a guy do a test of coolant for exhaust gases,
which were present, so head gasket was replaced, along with timing chain and pretentioners, fan was not kicking in when hot so thermostat was replaced aswell. idling in workshop everything ok, though when driving it, the same problem recurrs. and yet i've done 90% of what has been recommended. only really the coolant hoses and radiator to go.
one thing i picked up on having read a post earlier, i felt that a lot of the leaking coolant happened when i'd pulled up and switched enginge off.
any help would be appreciated.

Just do the cooling system overhaul and take care of everything all at once

Seems pretty obvious, after driving the car, remove the belly pan and get under the car to determine if it's leaking from the radiator, hoses or one of the new parts. You probably didn't have to do the head gasket or timing chain. Sounds like the mechanic you have took you for a ride. No pun intended.

I had coolant disappearing without any obvious leaks.

What solved the problem for me was pressurizing my system with my Motive brake-bleeder pressurizer. At ~12psi, I noticed coolant oozing slightly from a hairline crack in the hard plastic at the top of the expansion tank where the upper radiator hose goes into the radiator.

Cool

thanks for all reply's, and very interesting Gary123 pressurizing the system
without having it running, i like the sound of that,
as for the coolant overhaul, having just paid out in total around 900 i'm
reluctant to shell out more just yet, and that's pounds not dollars,
better start saving, lol
again thanks to all.
