You said another cooling component blew out last week. It would be prudent to find out why cooling components are exploding. The cap on your ET is designed to relieve pressure to avoid this type of event - it would be wise to change that also. Granted plastic parts can fail due to age & fatigue from excessive heat cycles but more often than not there is an underlying cause. If your car was well maintained with correct cooling PM this should concern you even more. As I stated your electric fan works on 15 speed requests from the DME. When 1 or more of these requested speeds fails it is very difficult to diagnose - you are experiencing the classic symptoms (exploding parts at idle).

How old is your electric fan unit? If it is original it really should be tested since you have a manual and it is the only method of moving air at an idle.

The method above suggesting if your car holds temp at idle does little. You have a heavily buffered temp gauge (40C range). If you start from cold and just idle till it gets to 12 o' clock the temp may actually be climbing but the needle will not show any movement as it does not move to the right till the temp is severely high - then it jumps. Many e46 owners have used a software program (PA Soft - Ebay $25) to reduce or eliminate the temp gauge "normal buffer" so that any increase in temps is reflected immediately by a moving needle. I would recommend you look to doing this - it's free - just needs knowledge and the right tool.

If you really want to monitor this after you replace the ET use the hidden OBC function 7 which will show a digital display of the actual coolant temp in real time - this way you can see it increase although the needle is not moving.

Finally take the car for a spirited drive of at least 30 mins with nice high revs then get back to your home and idle - while idling at this point watch the temp gauge and the OBC temps - if the problem still exists - this is when you will see the temp climb. During idling bit put the AC ON then after 2 mins turn it off - watch the temp and the electric fan reaction. If you idle for at least 7-10 mins without any concern you should be ok. If you read my posts on here about this fan, going back many years, I have noted however that it can fail intermittently - the reduced temp buffer would be a good idea for future overheat prevention. If you get by Orangeville anytime PM me and I'll test it for you and remove the temp buffer.

Once I get it back I'll definitely be keeping a close eye on it. Trying to prepare it for sale in the best possible condition.

get a new mechanic , better yet , get a diff car and a diff attitude

and btw, you're in ontario, don't pretend to speak the lang of someone from the bronx, esp on the internet
