My Ride: '00 323i Sport Wagon
Whistles/whines from engine in strange conditions

My 2000 323i Sport Wagon is making a couple very strange whistle sounds. Here are the conditions for the first one:

1) It only happens in Drive - not Park or Neutral
2) It is not affected by the AC being on or off
3) It is only audible at low RPM (1200-2500)
4) It does not occur at idle
5) It decreases in pitch as the throttle increases
6) It goes away as soon as I lay into the throttle.
7) It seems to be inconsistent with RPM and more consistent with throttle position

The other noise happens under these conditions:

1) It only occurs at 5000 - redline
2) It only occurs in Drive
3) It does not happen if I gently bring the car to redline
4) It only present when I put my foot to the floor

And suggestions on where to start?

Sounds like the tranny may need attention. Automatic tranny, correct? I'd have the tranny fluid level checked first. When was the last time the tranny fluid and filter were changed? BMW's "lifetime fluids" was a marketing ploy and not a maintenance philosophy.

Do a simple belt test before more expensive things. Take the belts off, check all the bearings and tensioner. Easy check, hopefully nothing more. Good luck!
