2004 330i ZHP electrical problems

Hello all,

So I recently bought a 2004 330i zhp with 117k miles. Mechanically, the car drives pristine and looks great cosmetically. The only downfall is that the navigation/radio does not work, the gauge cluster lights do not power on, and no ac (does blow air though). On startup the BMW logo does come on but shuts down seconds later. The dash lights for the speedo, tach, turn signals etc. don't turn on but the exterior lights all work fine and it does display miles etc.

Before buying I thought it would be a simple electrical problem, but it has turned into a headache that I can't figure out. I have looked all over forums, googled but no luck. I also messed with the Kbus but no luck either.

Any suggestions would help greatly because I really don't want to resort to dealership help yet as I feel this is something I could fix myself.
Thanks!

Also, the previous owner did have a dice hooked up but took it out a couple months before I bought it.

The DICE module isn't the problem! It does sound like the k-bus is fubar'd. Google "BMW E46 troubleshooting k-bus." There are several tutorials on troubleshooting fixing k-bus problems.

Do you have a spare cluster you can borrow? From another car e46 just to rule out its not the cluster?

Check this thread out http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthr...729&highlight=

Looks like your issue above.. I would borrow a cluster from any e46 just to rule the cluster out. It will throw a tamper dot and asc dsc light but you can test functonality before opening your zhp one. You can also pull your zhp cluster and test on another car and do the #2 hidden cluster test.

2004 330i ZHP electrical problems

Sounds like a bad cluster (no lights/gauges except ABS, seat belt and gauges backlight). That's the standard failure I see coming in.

The nav/radio however is probably a separate problem. That one I don't repair.

Something else I have failed to mention is that when we were having heavy rains in San Diego this year, water was leaking down the passenger A-piller to the point where my carpet was soaked. The fuse box showed signs of rust. Some more symptoms would be that when the car has been off for awhile the remote locking system works flawlessly. When I turn on the ignition, the locking system no longer responds to the remote. Furthermore, the Kbus will show 12v when the ignition is off, but will drop to 11.7v when the ignition is switched on.

K-bus voltages are perfect. Check the back of the fuse box for corrosion, give the wires a tug if it's corroded because the copper can get completely eaten away inside the insulation. I still think the cluster is bad. If you send it in I can test is and repair if necessary.
