Auto Transmission Failsafe

I own a 2000 328ci and I am having some strange transmission issues. The other day, as I was coming to a slow stop at a stop sign, the car kind of jerked when trying to shift down to third and got stuck in 4th with check engine light and "!" coming up. I pulled off and cut off the car. Turned it back on and check engine light remained, but it had readjusted out of 4th. Once it goes to shift from 3rd to 4th, it drops in and stays in 4th until I turn off the car. It does this fairly consistently, so I haven't been driving it. Took it to my local shop that specializes in foreign cars. They charged me $85, test drove it, and said I need a new transmission. They quoted me at $2800. The transmission was working absolutely fine until that day- no slippage or jerkiness, which leads me to believe the transmission doesn't need to be totally replaced. Especially since they didn't do anything except test drive it. I've been reading up and this problem has been solved with new transmission fluid and/or a solenoid. Any knowledge is useful before I drop 3 grand on a transmission that I'm not even sure needs to be swapped out.

Get the actual codes read or get a scanner and do it yourself. You can then make a more informed decision based on the codes.
