Driver Window issues

I have an 01 330i and just recently, my driver window wouldnt roll all the way up, it makes a lot of noise when it does. Now, it only rolls down, a few inches, and is difficult to get up. I have to hit down and up several times to get it to go all the way up. And sometimes i will have to adjust it forward or back a bit. Could it be the regulator and motor or one or the other?

More than likely the regulator. The gears are made of hard plastic and break due to the age of the car. Motor is most likely good. I had to change one on my co-worker's passenger rear door of a 330i.

Window regulators are VERY common failure items on our cars especially sedans. If you hear noise the motor is working. Just buy the regulator. Stay away from the cheap aftermarket China/Taiwan stuff from part store, ebay, amazon, doorman ect. I tried some of these on my car because they were cheap and easy to replace. I didn't expect much from a $30-40 low quality knockoff copy of an already failure prone part. Especially for the driver window. After trying a few different cheap regulators that didn't last more than 6 months I bought an oem part for drivers window. I have not had any problems since. Both of my rear window regulators are cheap bs parts but are still working due to much less usage. Bottom line is oem for left front at least.

+1 on OEM regulator. I bought the 1/2 price one first. It lasted a day. I mean literally one day. Returned it and put in a genuine BMW. Going strong a year and a half later.

And OP, you have the exact same symptoms I did right before it completely failed. Luckily it wasn't all the way down and I was able to sandwich the glass between my palms and pull it all the way up.

My front left window regulator was toast (plastic bushings on the guide rail had dried out and partially broken), but I was able to get it working with the zip tie method.

Not all window trouble will be the regulator, not all regulator issues will be fixable with the zip tie method, but it's worth taking a look before dropping $$$.

I just picked up a 04 XI with 281k on it. This is the cheapest fix ever in BMW land. Trying not to spend to much on this car with the mileage it has.
