So, belts/pulleys/water pump failed but you continued driving? I'd say that thing is pretty much done. No matter how you slice it.

If the water pump failed and you kept driving, there's about 100% chance it overheated, toasted the head gasket and most likely also the head. Sure, you can't tell for sure until you start disassembling stuff, but based on what you described I don't think you'll get by with just putting new water pump, belts and pulleys in there.

That's insane... a brand new water pump costs about $60...

EDIT: Water pump link: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-saleri-p...517527910~sal/

When my pump cracked, I drove a few more blocks -- without PS or alternator -- until it was safer to park (and wayyyyy before the temp went up, for those curious). The cracked pump froze the pulley and took out the belt (it flat-out snapped).

I then got my car towed to my mechanic, where we replaced the pump and all belts (and coolant, since it leaked out from the pump)... total cost was less than $120 in parts and I was driving again later that afternoon (of course, it helps that I have AAA, so the tow was free). If your mechanic's halfway honest, you're looking at $150 in labor, max (if you can't DYI).

Unless there's more to this story, I feel your mechanic is screwing you out of a perfectly good car.
