Bad engine tick on 323i - can be heard from inside

Hi,

I really hope some of you more experienced folk can help put my mind at ease with this one

My 323i has had an annoying engine tick pretty much since i bought it (6months ago) ive looked into all sorts like the disa and vanos but there not been any clear evidence to point either of these out as the cause.

I have previously made some videos of this but you can never here the noise through my crappy phone camera! the only wake i can describe the noise is like a think piece of metal tapping on the spokes of a spinning bike wheel....

The reason im posting this is because today i miserably failed at swapping out the FSR or FSU down to the wrong driver type but since driving it about a little with the dash under panel off the noise is significantly louder and appears to be coming from just in front of the steering gubbins but in the engine bay and is very rpm dependent, terrible at 3000 hardly audible at idle and doesn't matter if the engine is hot or cold.

Im going to try and get a decent video but to me this really doesnt sound right and im now thinking i really need to get to the bottom of it as i cant see it being normal or good for the car!

Cheers for reading folks

Could be vanos or disa, watch YouTube videos and compare to your sound. Check for loose heat shield around the brake booster, mine was rattling loud until I fixed it

will have a good look around tomorrow and see what i can find but i really dont think its disa or vanos related, the noise gets louder if you stick your head down just towards the rear of the drivers side wheel, its RHD bare in mind

Maybe lifter tick but that comes from under the valve cover. Could be the disa. Try unplugging the disa to see if it stops the ticking.

tried the whole disa, think no noise when unplugged and have taken it out and looks perfectly fine...

if you where looking at the engine with the bonet up from the front the noise sounds like its from the back left, which to me seems weird....
