if you have $6k to spend not including the price of the car, i would look for one that isn't broken. anything you find will need maintenance but there should be no issue finding a manual E46 in the $6k range. My car was $6k nearly 3 years ago now. these cars are also pretty common here on the island, they just tend to be on the beat or terribly-modded side of things.

Buy it, put in a new tranny. Sell it for $5k. Profit $2k for a weekends worth of work.

Assuming no other problems and that's a big assumption, AW.

$2500 is too much for a non-functional 330i.

What are the symptoms of the blown transmission? You mentioned stressing the motor, did you drive it? It could be something simple at that mileage.

The diff found in auto e46s paired with a manual transmission is a lot more fun and performance oriented. The ideal swap is the 3.38 and a 6MT so you're not running the engine at high revs on the freeway.

OP, if you have the patience (that's the big one), technical know how and resources to attempt this sort of thing, then I see no problem.

If this is your only way of getting into an e46, either start considering an e36, another BMW platform or another make all together. I can effectively guarantee that the transmission won't be the only issue. Not to mention the car doesn't have sport package or other nice factory options like that and it's got body damage. Not exactly the blank canvas I would want to start with.

You don't buy an automatic car for the differential and then put a manual transmission in it. You're doing this backwards.

You mean OP is doing it backwards? My M3 has 3 pedals in it. Anyway, if one owns an auto e46 and wishes to perform a manual swap, it makes a lot more sense to leave the 3.38 in the car. It will cost you less and be more fun to drive. Why else would Mango have swapped his original diff for a 3.38?

Because it would get him more attention? Why else would he do any of the stuff he does?

The last thing individuals such as Mango and myself want to do is attract more attention from turds like you.

What is your purpose for existing? Spewing misinformation and inciting arguments? I wish I had the amount of free time an individual such as yourself has. It must be nice to have no other responsibility or duty in life aside from irritating people.

A thread Cavi Mike posted in is now a bitchfest? Go figure. I'll alert Wolf Blitzer of the CNN situation room.

Excuse me, but do you not recall telling me that I was, "doing it backwards" when I discussed pairing a manual transmission with the 3.38 diff from an automatic e46? Here, allow me to refresh your memory which is demonstrably lacking.

Of course I do - because it seems strange to me to use the car's differential as a "positive" for buying it.

No one was implying that he should buy the damn car for the differential. The point, which you clearly missed, was that if he does buy the car and perform the swap, he can leave the differential in the vehicle because it is a positive. People with manual e46s view the 3.38 automatic diff as a performance upgrade.

WOAAAHH before this gets waaaay out of hand, I'm thinking, with the opinions here, I'll pass on her, and start looking elsewhere for a running 330i. I'm fairly skilled in the automotive department, but seeing as how there could be alot wrong, I could definitely see this build going way over budget. Besides, there's no rush right now, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing a deal here. I'll let you guys know what I find though.

stuck on a sedan or is coupe acceptable? coupe options really open it up as they seem more common around here with 3 pedals.

want a project?

at least you get the manual to start. and a cool grand cheaper than the other one.

here's one that works if you're into the distastefully modded scene

awd?

oh hey found a pretty clean one

looks like that one will at least need a new ambient temp sensor as i doubt it was 122 degrees in fairfield with no leaves on the trees
