Question 2000 323i Transmission Swap GM for ZF....is it possible?

I have a 2000 323i with the infamous "no reverse".....can the BMW GM transmission be swapped for the ZF transmission? GM Transmission came out of a 2000 323i.

No, I believe they use different computers and wire harnesses. Would be very inconvenient to say the least. A manual trans swap is your best option at this point

Forget that. Just get an updated reverse drum and install it. You just need hand tools and a clean workplace.

All the information you need on the 5hp19 is in my sig below.

The amount of information on rebuilding the ZF is so good that I would not even recommend getting a used transmission. It would cost you less to rebuild the ZF and have a brand new upgraded one. I'd replace the torque converter as well with one that has an updated viton seal instead of the rubber one.
You could have it out in 3 hours. Jjrichars videos are excellent. All is linked in that thread below. Good luck.

I hear you.....and I'm very handy, doing probably 75-80% of the work on my engine....but I've never even attempted a transmission, not sure I could do that, and I don't have a lift. But it has crossed my mind!

.
To replace the drum whole transmission needs to be apart. It is very time consuming and most likely transmission will fail soon after.

IDK why a lift matters with a swap vs a rebuild...
