059 3b - Stall Speed Error (P0720) - Transmission Warning light - exclamation

Hi all, I have been reading multiple forums about thew issue I am having but have not been able to find a solution.

The 'cog of death' (Gear cog symbol with the exclamation point) came on a couple of weeks back and was coming on intermittently and would go away as soon as i restarted the car. Went and got the codes read and it came back with only the 059 3B - Stall speed error. No others...

Comes and goes randomly and disappears when I restart the car again but don't want it to continue. I have heard of multiple causes but no real solutions. My belief is that it is a sensor/electrical issue as there is no slip or any other drive issues.

I am leaning towards the input or output speed sensor being the issue after the amount of reading I have done. I cant see how it can be the output speed sensor because this only seems to happen and go into limp mode when the car is stationary, hence no output speed, right?

Have changed tranny fluid.

I have noticed this occurs when at least one of these factors is in play:

Car is stopped.
Car has been driven for 20+ mins or multiple times throughout the day (transmission fluid hot?)
Car has multiple passengers (under load - fluid hot?)

Other notes:

Car can sometimes stumbles under heavy braking to a stop and has stalled twice before. - cleaned MAF sensor and seems to have helped a little.
Power steering can become very heavy when braking hard and then looking to turn, like coming into a car park.

Are these related? Not sure...

Any ideas or solutions from anyone out there in the BMW world?

Same issue here!

Hello buddy,

I've been having the same issue, based on my research im going to replace the tranny fluid and filter and also the tranny speed sensor and pulse generator, even though i believe theres 2 sensors within the transmission. I'll be posting my results.

Were you able to fix the problem?

Best regards
