e46 facelift 2002 coolant light help please

Hi guy just a quick one and let me get straight to it basically...

No loss of coolant at all
No leaks at all bone dry
No overheating
Fully bled no air

And coolant light will only appear wen its cold and will stay on all the time unless i fiddle with the float bobbing it up and down but doesnt always work and the colour of the float is red is that orignal or a after market ?tank, once i get the light off it will not return unless its been off all night and come out in the morning once its all cold and its back on im not overly worried atm as iv changed the coolant level sensor, and heard if its a aftermarket tank that cud be a issuse with the float magnet if anyone cud shed some light id greatly apperiate and cars on 191k

Odds are, the sensor on the bottom of the tank is dying.

More likely that OP has a cheap aftermarket ET with a junk float/magnet design. Those coolant level sensors are dead simple, a reed switch activated by a magnet. While the crappy ebay ETs have floats with weak magnets.

Look for the authentic BMW stamp on the ET to verify it's genuine.

You can easily test the wiring by unplugging the temp sensor and shorting the plug contacts.

Also, you can test the float by pushing it down with a broom handle or the like.

Shorting the wires won't affect anything but the dash light.

Correct. The sensor itself is a switch, which either connects or disconnects the wires. Connecting the two wires together simulates the float magnet coming close to the sensor and the dash light should go on.

How cold it is where you live? Any chance of your coolant freezing during the night? (In that case maybe you just have regular water in your system or not the correct coolant).

Last few days have been +2 degrees fairly cold but have the correct blue anti freeze and is new also and thencoolant before was blue im strong siding with the expanstion tank being at fault as i took engine cover off as its the n42 block and cannot for the life of me see a bmw sticker i have seen a tank at euro car parts and its made by HELLA thats a german make right? Would that be ok to use as the tanks for bmw are nearly 100 quid

Check realoem.com for the exact part #. Don't know if they ship to UK but fcpeuro.com is always a good online store if you want original parts.
