2002 325XI Vibration

I'm getting a muffled sounding vibration from the rear end at highway speeds . Not very violent at the moment but don't want to wait long . Also , when the car is cold and you put it in drive and especially reverse then hit the brakes I'm getting a grinding metal on metal noise. It sounds very similar to a burnt out brake pad rubbing on a rotar but all the brakes and rotars are new from this past fall. The cv axels in the back are original I believe , ones in the front are new. Any ideas ? Possibly a wheel hub or bearing?
Also, after the car warms up the grinding noise stops. The vibration is also on and off, does not happen every time you drive the car.

brakes and rotors? Good; the rotors in the rear also have "mini" drums - for the emergency brake. You have a good ear; my kids chuckle at me when I'm in a car and and pin point noises coming from the vehicle. How
does the emergency brake feel when you pull up on it? You could also pull it when you hear the sound? Keeping your thumb on to release it, if No difference.
So because you "nailed" the sound, I'd bet the emergency brake pads are the problem. Did someone else do the brakes? Maybe a spring broke inside one of the drums?
Vibration? check to see if the exhaust shifted and is rubbing a frame member. Let us know what you find.
