Steering Column Wobbly

Hi all! I have searched high and low and not found what I am looking for, several threads with no response ect...

Whilst very hard to explain I will have a go, in my car there is play in the steering wheel, not the usual left right when turning the wheel, but if you hold the wheel you can move it up and down about 2mm...

This causes a rattle and vibration type shake when driving and ruins the experience, is there anything I can do to improve this?

A mechanic said it's a result of the PO using the wheel as purchase to lift themselves out the car which has worn the clamp...

Thanks All!!

I don't doubt this one bit - my son's Toyota Tacoma drivers door rubs on the bottom of the door frame when you close it. This is the result of the truck having been lifted and now the door is being used to pull yourself in. There are things on cars and trucks that aren't meant to be used in the fashion in which some use them.

Yes I know just what you mean, almost as painful as watching people slam cars over speed bumps... Its bearable but so annoying I have to death grip the wheel to prevent the vibration!

As additional information, I have had the front end checked out and all is secure, bushes and control arms full of life and sway bar end links have about 300 miles on them... So it's defiantly the upper part of the column. I have heard reference to a plastic bushing/baring on the column, is this at all exchangeable?

That is the left right play with couplers mine has no "steering play" eg left or right but the entire adjustable column housing has "up and down play" or wobbles sorry about my dodgy explanations

There is a bearing behind the steering wheel. You take the wheel off and the......clock spring....then it's right there.
These wheels are very easy to take off. Just disconnect battery due to air bag deployment. Don't know if that will fix it but it's there none the less.

Sounds awesome mate! I guess the real hard part is where to source said bearing?

Anyone know where I can gain this bearing and any experience of changing it?

Forward motion has hearings but there is usually a supply house with them in your area. I'd get a good one.

If that's even the cause.
The main part is getting the courage to take that wheel off. Whatever you do be careful if regreasing it. Very little goes a long way and you don't want it anywhere else. I have pictures of this somewhere.

As an update to this strange issue it seems to be very temperamental, today I went for a good spin of 100 miles or so and not one shake rattle or anything...

If it helps there is also a squeak when wiggling the wheel

Can you buy the Upper Steering Plastic Bearing separate from the stealers?

If you hit the wheel from the bottom you get a loud knock type thump noise where it "loose"
