My Ride: 2004 BMW 325i 5spd
I know on e30, should be similar on e46 the steering column is locked from up/down movement by a spring that locks the column with clip of some sort. I also remember there were few washers that are to be placed in strategic places....I'm thinking that your steering column was taken apart at some point and not put back in place properly.

Check realoem on the parts and assembly for this unit.

Alternatively, as a test, you can just try temporarily locking the column with a washer to null the up/down movement, see if it helps the issue you're chasing.

That sounds like a good shout! This is a diagram from RealOEM anyone got an idea on where I am placing said washers...

I think this is in this link, but regardless, what I would do, is just to remove the steering wheel and some more and find a spot to insert "C" type washer somewhere. Then assemble and test out if it helps the problem.

It looks like the realoem is not showing the full breakdown of parts in the steering column, unless it is a 1 piece unit that can't be taken apart.

EDIT: here how realoem shows it for e30. You can see all individual parts. You can also see the spring that hold it from wobbling.
