Magnaflow Race-can Exhaust Detailed Review

One month ago I made the decision to upgrade my stock exhaust on my 323i for a more "performance" oriented system and I to say the least I was satisfied with the results.

My primary purpose for this mod was strictly for THE NOISE. Since my car is mostly stock and any performance gains would essentially be negligible since the stock exhaust does the best job of providing adequate back pressure for low end torque optimization. The muffler I went with was a universal Magnaflow (PN 14156) race muffler. The 323i has a single pipe running from the first resonator back so I decided to delete the rear resonator since I was chopping it up anyway and hoped it would give it a more aggressive sound. Here are the results.

(Take the time to find a sound system with decent bass response for best viewing quality)

Driving with this system on the freeway is no louder than stock. In town driving is a tad more louder because the deep sound produced at low rpm is more noticeable. A fun bonus is the backfire noise you get when you take your foot off the gas. It is not necessarily a pop like a real backfire but more of a burp.

Approximately 14k miles after the system was installed, I have noticed a change in the sound. It has become quieter and less noise gets through to the exit. Does it drone? Yes, only when the car is at operating temperature and around 1800-2200 rmp. Depending on the engine load and what gear the car is in will determine the intensity. Going uphill in a high gear is when it is at its worst (6 out of 10); normal driving is more of a 3.

This being said, the grand total for this system was $260, definitely a budget option for any fanatic looking to extract a bit more sound from our kick a** engines. I realize there are far better systems available, it just didn't seem practical to fit a $1100 dollar muffler to a car valued at 4G. Much rather use that money to keep it maintained.

I'm not really sure I'd call a Magnaflow #14156 a muffler...

The body is 4" Diameter X 6" Long, this about the same size as some of the soup cans I have in my kitchen.

Do you have the app? If so give that a try. Not exactly sure what would prevent you from downloading it.
